The Orange County Board of County Commissioners has rejected a proposed 0.5% sales tax increase to fund transportation initiatives. The county has been seeking additional transportation funding options as it faces a $20 billion worth of needed future projects.
District 1 Commissioner Nicole Wilson voted against measure, citing the lack of initiatives that would benefit District 1. “I’ll be talking with people in Oakland, Winter Garden and Windermere, and I literally have nothing to show them,” Wilson said.
The Orange County Charter Review Commission is now reviewing the creation of a transportation mobility advisory commission, which would advise the board on how to allocate funds for transportation needs.
During a 9 year period from 2012 to 2021, developers received a 68% discount on transportation impact fees paid on new development, an average discount of $6,240 per 2,000 sq. ft. home. During that same time frame, the cost of a 1-mile road increased from $2 million to over $3 million, further reducing how far funding could go.
A 1% sale tax to fund transportation was on the ballot in 2022, which was rejected by 58% of voters.
