Horizon West is a community in west Orange County, Florida. The area is experiencing rapid expansion due to the desirability of the area; including the schools, weather, attractions, and new amenities. Throughout much of the Horizon West area, communities and houses can view nightly fireworks from Disney’s Magic Kingdom. At approximately 30% complete, the current population is 25,365 people and will become home to more than 90,000 residents when completed. 

The government of Horizon West is Unincorporated Orange County, but falls within the zip codes of Windermere and Winter Garden, 34786 and 34787. Therefore most residents simply state they live in either of these cities, as no addresses include Horizon West as their city. Horizon West receives all government services through Orange County, including schools, Sheriff’s Office, library system, and solid waste.

History of Horizon West
The area comprising of Horizon West is primarily former citrus groves. The large majority of these groves were destroyed in the freezing winters of the 1980s, which devastated the industry. In 1994, property owners in the area worked with Orange County to start developing a master plan for the area. This plan would prevent a piecemeal approach to the development with the desire to prevent challenges that other developing regions faced.

The design for Horizon West segmented the community into 6 unique villages. Each village would have a centralized commercial space, designed to be within walking distance to large portions of the local area. In addition, a larger Town Center would house the larger commercial needs of the area. This concept has been realized and can be clearly seen in each village. The villages of Horizon West are:
