Orange County’s latest traffic safety initiative at the Schofield Road and Avalon Road intersection is now fully operational, marking a significant step toward enhancing road safety in the area. This initiative comes in response to a history of traffic concerns and accidents that have plagued this junction.
The speed limit on Avalon Road has been reduced to 40 mph, a change aimed at giving drivers more time to react and reducing the severity of any potential collisions. The new stoplight has now been fully activated at the intersection, designed to better regulate the flow of traffic and minimize the risk of accidents.
Since the activation of the stoplight, traffic has generally flowed more smoothly through the intersection. However, there is a notable exception during peak hours: the left turn lane from Avalon onto Schofield tends to experience significant backups. To alleviate this, the light has been programmed with an extended green left-turn arrow, allowing a larger number of vehicles to clear the intersection more efficiently.
During a six-month period spanning 2023 and 2024, the Florida Highway Patrol reported nine car crashes at this location. Moreover, in late April, another serious incident occurred involving a vehicle that rolled over multiple times after a collision at the intersection.
