Windermere High School is officially moving their football stadium to be onsite at the high school. After facing numerous issues with the off-site stadium at Deputy Scott Pine Park in 2022, OCPS is moving forward with plans to move the stadium.
During the process to build Windermere High School, which helped relieve West Orange High, numerous residents in the area opposed the high school site. As part of the compromise to get the school built, the Board of County Commissioners moved the stadium offsite in a partnership with Orange County Parks.
The new stadium however offered limited seating and only a small paved parking lot, requiring attendees to park on the multi-use field or get bussed from the high school. During the 2022 football season, inclement weather disrupted this plan further, as the multi-use field became too damaged and muddy. The Parks Department then restricted parking on the field, requiring all attendees to park at the high school.
The game was then postponed and rescheduled at Dr. Phillips Stadium.
With the biggest issue being the lack of shelter at the stadium in the event of inclement weather, Commissioner Pam Gould and Commissioner Nicole Wilson acted to solve the situation with broad community support to bring the stadium back onsite.
Tentative timeline for completion of remaining facilities, assuming no appeal of BZA decisions:
- Bleacher foundations 9/1/2023
- Relocate bleachers 10/15/2023
- Sidewalks and fencing 10/15/2023
- Stadium lighting 11/15/2023
- Concession and restrooms 8/1/2024
Some existing infrastructure from Deputy Scott Pine Park will be moved to the high school. A new building for concessions and restrooms will also be constructed on-site, but won’t be ready until the beginning of the 2024-2025 school year. The goal is to have the on-site stadium ready for games towards the end of the 2023 season. During the Horizon West Town Hall, Pam Gould stated they will find temporary solutions for food and restrooms at the new onsite stadium for games that are played before the new concessions building is ready.
