A deadly collision occurred around 6:30am this morning along Schofield Road, close to the intersection of 5 Mile Road by Southern Hill Farms.
According to FHP, a Nissan Maxima traveling eastbound crossed the double yellow line into the westbound lanes, striking the front of a Jeep Grand Cherokee.
The driver of the Nissan Maxima, a 52-year-old Clermont man, died at the scene. The driver of the Jeep, a 39-year old Orlando man, was flown to Orlando Regional Medical Center in critical condition.
In comments posted on a Lake County Sheriff’s Office post, users shared stories of dangerous conditions along Schofield Road, frequently mentioning drivers passing over the double yellow line.
While the newly paved road has improved east-west access, it has created more danger on Horizon West roadways, with Orange County installing a temporary light at the Avalon Road due to the number accidents at the intersection.
