Orange County Sheriff’s Office is holding a hiring event on Saturday, March 9 for 911 Operators in the Emergency Communications Center. The event continues OCSO’s efforts to improve the answer rate on 911 calls. An additional 27 operators have already been hired and are in the training process, which includes several months of training and state certification.
State of Florida minimum requirements state at least 90% of 911 calls are answered within 10 seconds. However, the Orange County answer rate in January 2024 was 82.9%, indicating that 17.1% of calls took longer than 10 seconds to answer.
The biggest challenges facing Orange County are abandoned 911 calls and a staffing shortage. When a caller hangs up, the time needed can be even longer than a normal call, as operators must follow-up on the call and resolve it, taking up more time. In 2023, Android phones released an emergency SOS feature that auto-dials 911, and has created a significant increase in the amount of abandoned calls.
If you dial 911, stay on the line and do not hang up – your call will be answered!
Pay rates for 911 Operators start at $20.15/hour and may be eligible for a $3,000 sign-on bonus. The event is at OCSO’s headquarters at 2500 W. Colonial Drive, from 10am to 2pm on Saturday, March 9. For more information, visit governmentjobs.com.
