Orange County District 1 Commissioner Nicole Wilson has confirmed that a lower speed limit and portable traffic signals are being implemented soon at the Avalon and Schofield intersection.
This improvement comes after HorizonWestInfo.com confirmed with Orange County Public Works in January that no improvements were planned for the intersection, which then prompted Commissioner Wilson and members of the community to advocate for improvements at the dangerous intersection.
The speed limit will be reduced to 40mph, and then portable signals will be placed to improve traffic flow and safety.
Speed Limit Tentative Timeline:
- 3/28: Variable Message Boards placed to alert drivers of upcoming speed limit change
- 4/4: Speed limit reduced to 40mph. Message Boards remain in place until 4/11.
Portable Traffic Signal Tentative Timeline:
- 4/11: Variable Message Boards updated to alert drives of upcoming traffic pattern change
- 4/16: Portable signal goes into flashing yellow/red mode
- 4/23: Portable signal enters full operation.
According to Florida Highway Patrol documents, there have been 9 car crashes at the intersection since the connection to Lake County opened in September 2023.
