Orange County, Florida, has opened its first water reclamation facility in over 30 years. The Hamlin Water Reclamation Facility, constructed by Wharton-Smith, will serve around 40,000 residents in the southwest of the county, with a current capacity of 5 million gallons per day. The facility is designed for two additional phases, with a final total capacity of 15 million gallons per day.
The Hamlin Water Reclamation Facility incorporates an advanced water treatment process that produces reclaimed water. The facility includes preliminary treatment structures with screening, grit and odor control, an activated sludge treatment train, tertiary filters, a chlorine contact tank, and sludge holding tanks, among other features. Additionally, the project includes a 3,600 linear feet off-site force main and an off-site $8 million master pump station complete with a CIP wet well, electrical building, and odor control system.
Reclaimed water is stored in the Public Access Reuse (PAR) tank before being pumped offsite to Conserv II. However, in case of any operational issues that affect the quality of the reclaimed water, such as low chlorine, high or low pH, or high TSS, the affected treatment system immediately diverts water to prevent substandard water from reaching the PAR customers. The substandard flow is then automatically directed to the reject pond until the issue is resolved, and then forward flow can be resumed for regular operation.
The Hamlin Water Reclamation Facility (HWRF) has provided additional employment opportunities for the area, with staffing required 16 hours a day. The facility requires a team of nine professionals during those times, including a Senior Operations Specialist, five Plant Specialists, a Senior Utilities Maintenance Coordinator, an Industrial Electrician, and two Industrial Mechanics.
The facility represents Orange County’s commitment to providing essential wastewater treatment services while safeguarding local natural resources.
