A new group has formed to combat the increasing level of street racing and speeding occurring in Horizon West, Windermere, and Winter Garden. Street racing has been an ongoing issue for residents throughout Horizon West. The issue has been reported on nationally by NBCNews and locally by Fox35Orlando. Additionally, Spectrum News13 recently reported on a dangerous crosswalk in Horizon West on Seidel Road.
The group on Facebook, called Residents Against Street Racing – Windermere, Horizon West, Winter Garden, describes itself as a community page where local residents can gather and organize in an effort to stop the perpetual street racing, drifting and donuts happening on our streets at all house of the day and night.
Reckless driving and speeding has already caused injury and death in Horizon West. In February 2023, a boy was critically injured in a hit and run along 535. After over 3 months in the hospital, the boy is finally scheduled to be released to go home next week. In early May 2023, a pedestrian was hit and killed while walking in a residential neighborhood.
Residents who encounter reckless driving or high speed are encouraged to contact the Orange County Sheriff’s Office by calling 9-1-1 or the non-emergency number at 407-836-4357. Additional information to contact OCSO is available at ocso.com.
