The City of Clermont has approved a new development along the Orange-Lake border to use well water for irrigation. Pulte Homes new Parkside Trails community will feature 948 homes immediately to the west of Hamlin, along the road named Wellness Way that will connect to New Independence Parkway.
Clermont Council approved the measure in a 4-1 vote. In a statement posted to Facebook, Council Member Tod Howard stated:
When I objected to the plan and insisted I could not support using wells for irrigation, Mayor Murray defended the action and then blamed the County…This dereliction of duty is 100% on the City of Clermont and the City Council who voted for it! We now know for a fact that the City of Clermont Leadership could not care less about water resources necessary for the community’s well being. Dont be fooled by their “I’m concerned about the environment” nonsense; their vote says otherwise.
Ironically, the development is located immediately next to a Water Conserv II rapid infiltration basin (RIB) site. The City of Orlando and Orange County supply reclaimed water to Conserv II, which distributes excess water not needed for irrigation into RIBs, which are used to recharge the Florida aquifer, Florida’s primary drinking water source. Utilizing reclaimed water for irrigation instead of well water reduces demand on the Florida aquifer, provided a dependable long-term source of irrigation water, and is not subject to water restrictions during drought.
