A developer has submitted a request to Orange County to rezone 33.7 acres to build 375 multi-family residential units in Windermere. The location is along Winter Garden Vineland Road, directly across from Windermere High School. The area is surrounded primarily by residential single-family houses.
Due to the small size of the land, the developer indicates the apartments will be 5-stories high, which will directly impact the surrounding communities that immediately abut the property. Even though across from a high school, which itself was built as a relief school, overcrowding remains a significant issue for Orange County Public Schools, even more so now with physical distancing required due to coronavirus. Traffic also in the area remains heavily congested, as Winter Garden Vineland Road is a major north/south thoroughfare that has experienced significant development feeding into it.
The request for the zoning change is in the preliminary stages and was submitted to Orange County on August 31, 2020. The request will first be reviewed by the Zoning & Planning Commission, and if approved, will be sent to the Board of County Commissions to approve or deny. Community Meeting information will be sent out by Orange County to residents in the proximity of the development. Parcel ID is 14-23-27-0000-00-006 and the request is LUP-20-08-239.
